Where AI Meets Accountability

Back from the AI in Education Symposium at Albany. One thing stood out: 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐮𝐧𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐲 𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐀𝐈. These weren’t skeptics; they were the forward-thinking ones, the people who chose to show up and engage. And still, the fear was palpable.

Meanwhile, 𝐀𝐈 𝐢𝐬 𝐚𝐥𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐬𝐫𝐨𝐨𝐦, just not in the way districts control:

• 42% of students report using AI tools weekly in their schoolwork (Technological Horizons in Education, June 2025)

• 30% of teachers say they’re using AI weekly to support instruction (Gallup, June 2025)

𝐒𝐨 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭’𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐜𝐭?

AI is an open-ended technology. Even the engineers building it call it a black box. You never know quite what will come out. That’s exciting for individual work, but terrifying for school systems accountable for:

• Quality and accuracy

• Equity and accessibility

• Legal compliance, student safety, and public scrutiny
